    Contributors: Beitler, Ruth; Gerstein, Sarah;
    Abstract:

    This addition to the Women and Society around the World series explores the roles, challenges, and accomplishments of women in the military in countries across the globe.

    Around the world, millions of men serve in their countries' militaries, be it on land, on the seas, or in the air. But while many militaries have opened all positions to women, even those on the front lines, others remain closed. Countries have cited a number of reasons for their policies, changing views of women and the military, conscription, economic, and demographic trends.

    Written by a professor of comparative politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and an active duty army major, this book seeks to provide an understanding of women's roles in militaries around the world. The book is organized by region, exploring societal and cultural views of masculinity and war, as well as factors influencing changing views of women and the military, including conscription, economic, and demographic trends. Topics also include sexual harassment, recruitment, and views on women's physicality and strength. High school students, undergraduates, and general readers will find this cross-cultural study a fascinating and important resource.

    • Provides readers with an overview of women's role in militaries across the globe

    Contributors: Frana, Philip; Klein, Michael;
    Abstract:

    This authoritative reference work will provide readers with a complete overview of artificial intelligence (AI), including its historic development and current status; existing and projected AI applications; and present and potential future impact on the United States and the world.

    Some people believe that artificial intelligence (AI) will revolutionize modern life in ways that improve human existence. Others say that the promise of AI is overblown. Still others contend that AI applications could pose a grave threat to the economic security of millions of people by taking their jobs and otherwise rendering them "obsolete"—or, even worse, that AI could actually spell the end of the human race.

    This volume will help users understand the reasons AI development has both spirited defenders and alarmed critics; explain theories and innovations like Moore's Law, mindcloning, and Technological Singularity that drive AI research and debate; and give readers the information they need to make their own informed judgment about the promise and peril of this technology. All of this coverage is presented using language and terminology accessible to a lay audience.

    • Introduction explaining the historical evolution of AI
    • Chronology of important AI-related events

    Contributors: Greenfield, Thomas;
    Abstract:

    American Musicals in Context: From the American Revolution to the 21st Century gives students a fresh look at history-based musicals, helping readers to understand the American story through one of the country's most celebrated art forms: the musical.

    With the hit musical Hamilton (2015) captivating audiences and reshaping the way early U.S. history is taught and written about, this book offers insight into an array of musicals that explore U.S. history. The work provides a synopsis, critical and audience reception, and historical context and analysis for each of 20 musicals selected for the unique and illuminating way they present the American story on the stage.

Each in its own way helps us rediscover and discover anew pivotal national crises, key political decisions, defining moral choices, unspeakable and unresolved injustices, important and untold stories, defeats suffered, victories won in the face of monumental adversity, and the sacrifices borne publicly and privately in the process of creating the American narrative, one story at a time. • Jackie Robinson: A Life in American History Jackie Robinson: A Life in American History
    Author(s): Smith, Courtney;
    Contributors: Smith, Courtney;
    Abstract:

    Jackie Robinson: A Life in American History provides readers with an understanding of the scope of Robinson's life and explores why no Major League baseball player will ever again wear number 42 as his regular jersey number.

    This book captures Robinson's lifetime, from 1919 to 1972, while focusing on his connections to the unresolved promise of the Reconstruction Era and to the civil rights movement of the 20th century. In addition to covering Robinson's athletic career with the UCLA Bruins, the Kansas City Monarchs, the Montreal Royals, and the Brooklyn Dodgers, the book explores sociopolitical elements to situate Robinson's story and impact within the broader context of United States history. The book makes deliberate connections among the failure of Reconstruction, the creation of the Negro Leagues, the rise and decline of legalized segregation in the United States, the progress of the civil rights movement, and Robinson's life.

    Chronological chapters begin with Robinson's life before he played professional baseball, continue with an exploration of the Negro Leagues and Robinson's career with the Brooklyn Dodgers, and conclude with an examination of Robinson's post-retirement life as well as his influence on civil rights. Supplemental materials including document excerpts give readers an opportunity to explore contemporary accounts of Robinson's career and impact.

    • Provides readers with insight into the ways the unfulfilled promise of the Civil War and Reconstruction eras impacted areas of life beyond politics
    • Provides readers with an understanding of how professional baseball reflects American society and vice versa
    • Informs readers that Major League baseball in the 19th century experienced a period of integration before entering a prolonged period of segregation
    • Demonstrates how the effort to reintegrate the Major Leagues was tied to World War II and to efforts to promote integration in other areas of American society
    • Shows Robinson's significance both within and outside of the world of professional baseball

  • The Supreme Court The Supreme Court
    Author(s): Silverstein, Helena;
    Contributors: Silverstein, Helena;
    Abstract:

    This accessible guide to the U.S. Supreme Court explains the Court's history and authority, its structure and processes, its most important and enduring legal decisions, and its place in the U.S. political system.

    A 2018 Pew Research Center poll found that while 78 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents believed that the Supreme Court should base its decisions on the "modern" meaning of the Constitution, 67 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents asserted that Justices should rely on the Constitution's "original meaning."

    The Court often is the final arbiter of polarizing battles that originate in other branches of government. At the same time, however, its structural insulation from Congress, the Presidency, and electoral politics make the Supreme Court—at least in theory—well positioned to rise above the rough-and-tumble of politics.

    This book examines the power of the Supreme Court in America's system of democratic governance in several ways. These include: reviewing debates over whether justices should interpret the Constitution in line with its "original meaning" or in accordance with present-day understandings; exploring the processes and factors that shape how cases are chosen and decided; considering contentious battles over the selection of justices; and examining the impact of the Court on American culture and society.

    • Offers a primer on the U.S. Supreme Court, an intriguing, complicated, and often-controversial piece of the U.S. legal and political system
    • Identifies the sources of the Supreme Court's authority, the constraints to that authority, and ongoing debates about how the Court should exercise that authority
    • Highlights the uniqueness of the Supreme Court, an institution central to U.S. democracy but designed to be insulated from the public and a check against majority rule
    • Explores legal, political, and social factors that influence the Supreme Court and, in turn, how the Court shapes law, politics, and society
    • Covers key areas of Court decision-making, such as separation of powers between the President and Congress, civil rights (e.g., affirmative action and same-sex marriage), and civil liberties (e.g., freedom of speech and free exercise of religion)
    • Promotes literacy in the workings of democracy in the United States

  • Power and Restraint: The Moral Dimensions of Police Work, 2nd Edition Power and Restraint: The Moral Dimensions of Police Work, 2nd Edition
    Author(s): Feldberg, Michael; Cohen, Howard; Moll, Monica;
    Contributors: Feldberg, Michael; Cohen, Howard; Moll, Monica;
    Abstract:

    Thoroughly revised and updated, this edition of the classic casebook on police ethics explores the moral complexities of situations faced by law enforcement officers every day across the United States.

    This updated edition of Power and Restraint maintains its place as a leading set of standards for evaluating police behavior. It extends our understanding of the basis of police accountability by grounding it in principles of the social contract and constitutional democracy. It applies the standards of fair access, public trust, public safety first, role discipline, and neutral professionalism to a variety of modern policing situations that help identify best practices and increase understanding of the challenges of policing in 21st-century America.

    Power and Restraint first locates itself in the context of other significant studies by scholars from various disciplines on moral issues in police work. Next, it establishes a foundation for moral evaluation of police work grounded in social contract theory as expressed in the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Third, the authors generate five standards derived from the social contract for judging the actions of police. In the second half of the book, the reader is asked to apply these standards to a variety of typical but morally ambiguous policing situations.

    • Clarifies the basis for judgments of police behavior
    • Features case studies of actual law enforcement situations with complex ethical considerations
    • Improves police officers' ability to think about their actions by examining the principles of ethical policing and applying those principles to concrete cases
    • Explains both the need for and limitations on police authority, including the use of force

  • Malignant Narcissism: Recognizing a Dangerous Disorder Malignant Narcissism: Recognizing a Dangerous Disorder
    Author(s): Smith, Cary; Hung, Li-Ching;
    Contributors: Smith, Cary; Hung, Li-Ching;
    Abstract:

    In this book, a psychologist and a professor detail the history, psychology, and effects of this little-studied condition that has altered individuals and societies worldwide, arguing that the disorder deserves its own classification.

    Psychoanalyst Erich Fromm in 1964 developed the term "malignant narcissism," believing it to be the worst form of psychopathology, a disorder that essentially epitomized evil. Malignant narcissism, however, has never been identified as a clinical condition in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders; instead, it is seen as a conglomeration of several other disorders.

    Yet researchers since Fromm have described malignant narcissists as unique in their callous nature and proclivity to extreme violence, with a component of sadism bringing them pleasure when inflicting pain. The largest concern about malignant narcissists is that "some have the ability and wherewithal to rise to great positions of power and influence" and to affect large numbers of people.

  • Understanding Suicide's Allure: Steps to Save Lives by Healing Psychological Scars Understanding Suicide's Allure: Steps to Save Lives by Healing Psychological Scars
    Author(s): Krippner, Stanley; Riebel, Linda; Joffe Ellis, Debbie; Paulson, Daryl;
    Contributors: Krippner, Stanley; Riebel, Linda; Joffe Ellis, Debbie; Paulson, Daryl;
    Abstract:

    This book explains why suicide can be alluring to a person aiming to stop his or her traumatic pain—whether its source is bullying, sexual assault, war combat, or other PTSD-invoking events—and details approaches that can prevent suicide.

    Suicide has been a taboo topic in Western culture. The mere mention of suicide sparks reactive responses that include medical, moral, spiritual, and religious debates. As a result, the authors open an important discussion here, offering an honest and non-judgmental examination of the many aspects involved in the nature of suicide, explaining that above all, people need to learn how to support those struggling with suicidal thoughts or to intercept their own suicidal thinking. The book also includes an extensive review and evaluation of the many available mental health treatments.

    Special consideration is given to military suicides. U.S. soldier suicides exceed one per day and continue to rise in all military branches, while veteran suicide rates are even higher, averaging 17 per day. Communities, families, veterans, and service members are in need of tools and insights for coping with, navigating, and exposing the suicidal attitudes affecting many current and former members of the military.

    • Incorporates academic research, media coverage, and the authors' personal experiences
    • Includes topics associated with forms of suicide not widely addressed in other books, including evolutionary psychology, traumatic brain injury, prescription drug side-effects, and shamanism
    • Addresses suicide in the general population as well as within the cadre of some of the nation's newest veterans—those who served in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars

  • When Trauma Grips Our Children: The Basic Pyramid System for Counselors, Teachers, and Caregivers to Support Healing When Trauma Grips Our Children: The Basic Pyramid System for Counselors, Teachers, and Caregivers to Support Healing
    Author(s): Levine, James;
    Contributors: Levine, James;
    Abstract:

    Aimed at school staff and other caregivers on the front lines of providing assistance without in-depth training or an understanding of how trauma manifests, this book offers a detailed approach to helping children who have experienced trauma.

    Trauma in children varies in how it presents—in behavior, emotions, learning, and social interactions—and how to address it depends largely on its presentation. Children may exhibit many types of behavior that could be attributed to trauma, such as telling lies and feeling shame, lacking focus or having outbursts in class, and distrusting peers and adults, among many more.

    When you read this book, you'll learn how to support a child with severe trauma by employing a sensitive yet structured approach. Discussion of a kaleidoscope of case studies using the new Basic Pyramid model, developed by the author, will help you to determine appropriate intervention.

    • Introduces a new intervention model used as the basis of care for children with trauma
    • Offers clear application of intervention practices in case studies
    • Emphasizes the link between trauma, behavior, learning, emotions, and social interaction skills among children
    • Demonstrates that supportive action can produce positive responses in children with trauma

  • Germs at Bay: Politics, Public Health, and American Quarantine Germs at Bay: Politics, Public Health, and American Quarantine
    Author(s): Vidich, Charles;
    Contributors: Vidich, Charles;
    Abstract:

    This book examines America's experience with a wide range of quarantine practices over the past 400 years and explores the political, economic, immigration, and public health considerations that have prompted success or failure within the evolving role of public health.

    The novel strain of coronavirus that emerged in late 2019 and became a worldwide pandemic in 2020 is only one of more than 87 new or emerging pathogens discovered since 1980 that have posed a risk to public health. While many may consider quarantine an antiquated practice, in reality it is often one of the only defenses against new and dangerous communicable diseases. Tracing the United States' quarantine practices through the colonial, postcolonial, and modern eras, Germs at Bay: Politics, Public Health, and American Quarantine provides an eye-opening look at how quarantine has worked despite routine dismissal of its value.

    This book is for anyone seeking to understand the challenges of controlling the spread of COVID-19 and will help readers internalize the lessons that may be learned from the pandemic. No other title provides the level of primary source data on the United States' long reliance on quarantine practices and the political, social, and economic factors that have influenced them.

    • Offers guidance on quarantine decision-making within the U.S. democratic system
    • Chronicles the evolution of quarantine throughout U.S. history
    • Provides a detailed analysis of tens of thousands of primary-source local, state, and federal quarantine records that have been pieced together to tell America's quarantine story

  • Manifest Ambition: James K. Polk and Civil-Military Relations during the Mexican War Manifest Ambition: James K. Polk and Civil-Military Relations during the Mexican War
    Author(s): Pinheiro, John;
    Contributors: Pinheiro, John;
    Abstract:

    This is not another chronological retelling of the Mexican War. Instead, it examines civil-military clashes during the war in light of Jacksonian politics and the American citizen-soldier tradition, looking at events that shed light on civilian authority over the military, as well as the far reaching impact of political ambition during this period (specifically, presidential power and the quest for the presidency). By 1848, Americans had come to realize that in their burgeoning democracy, generals and politicians could scarcely resist the temptation to use war for partisan gain. It was a lesson well learned and one that still resonates today.

    The Mexican War is known for the invaluable experience it provided to future Civil War officers and as an example of America's drive to fulfill her Manifest Destiny. Yet it was more than a training ground, more than a display of imperialism. Significantly, the Mexican War tested civilian control of the military and challenged traditional assumptions about the role of the army in American society. In so doing, it revealed the degree to which, by 1846, the harsh partisanships of the Jacksonian Era had impacted the American approach to war. This is not another chronological retelling of the Mexican War. Instead, it examines civil-military clashes during the war in light of Jacksonian politics and the American citizen-soldier tradition, looking both at events that shed light on civilian authority over the military and at the far reaching impact of political ambition during this period (specifically, presidential power and the quest for the presidency).

    In addition to politics, a host of others factors marred civil-military relations during the war, threatening U.S. victory. These included atrocities committed by Americans against Mexicans, disobedient officers, and inefficient U.S. military governors. In the end, as Manifest Ambition shows, Polk's ability to overcome his partisan leanings, his micro-management of the war effort, and his overall strategic vision, helped avoid both a prolonged occupation and the annexation of All Mexico. By 1848, Americans had come to realize that in their burgeoning democracy, generals and politicians could scarcely resist the temptation to use war for partisan gain. It was a lesson well learned and one that still resonates today.

  • Sexual Health [4 volumes] Sexual Health [4 volumes]
    Author(s): Owens, Annette; Tepper, Mitchell;
    Contributors: Owens, Annette; Tepper, Mitchell;
    Abstract:

    In this unprecedented four-volume set, doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, educators, and clergy join forces to present information vital for sexual health. Topics candidly discussed include the meaning of sexual health, the effects of ignorance or neglect, and the role of love, touch, and communication. Doctors explain the roles of physical systems, while psychologists and members of the clergy detail the roles of religion, culture, and parental or family beliefs in spurring or squashing sexual health. State-of-the-art treatments and research are also featured. Each volume includes a chapter on how to talk with a doctor, therapist, or patient about sexual health.

    Americans feel free to tell medical doctors of health ills from headaches to hemorrhoids, and to tell psychologists about mental problems from depression to delusions. Yet, there is one area that affects both physical and mental health most people don't discuss with either doctor or psychologist: sexual health. According to a survey published by the American Medical Association, 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men in the United States experience some form of sexual dysfunction, problems are largely hidden, and so exacerbated. Doctors don't initiate the topic with patients; neither do most psychologists aside from trained sex therapists. The problems might not even be rooted in disorders commonly understood as illness. As officials at the World Health Organization have defined it, sexual health is more than the absence of disease. It is a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being related to sexuality.

    Abstract: Is NATO still in the best interest of the United States? This provocative work argues that the focus on NATO distracts the U.S. from the vital foreign policy challenges of the 21st century, most notably China's rise in power.Since its beginning in 1949, NATO—the North Atlantic Treaty Organization—has been at the center of United States foreign policy. The alliance was crucial during the decades of the Cold War, and the U.S. collaborated closely with NATO during crises in Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Libya. But does the NATO alliance still serve the best interests of the United States?The NATO of today—one that has expanded to 30 member countries—risks involving the U.S. in unwanted military activities of the future, actions that were not intended in the original Atlantic alliance. In addition, the real challenges for foreign policy of 21st century are not in Europe, but in the expanding economic powerhouses in Asia, especially China.NATO Reconsidered argues that the changes in world politics in recent decades requires that the more than 70-year-old alliance should no longer be the principal focus of U.S. foreign policy.

  • Stopping Military Suicides: Veteran Voices to Help Prevent Deaths Stopping Military Suicides: Veteran Voices to Help Prevent Deaths
    Author(s): Thomas, Kate; Taylor, Sarah;
    Contributors: Thomas, Kate; Taylor, Sarah;
    Abstract: Blending illustrative narratives from veterans with cutting-edge research, this book provides a model for a needed shift from treatment post-trauma to psychological training pre-trauma to prevent deep depression and resulting suicides.As suicides among members of the U.S. military and veterans continue at a rate higher than in the general population—at least 22 each day—and their calls for help become more tragically blatant, with three veterans waiting for treatment outside Veterans Administration hospitals in 2019 committing suicide, authors and former U.S. Marines, Kate Hendricks Thomas and Sarah Plummer Taylor, present a call for a new approach to help halt the needless deaths. Thomas, now a researcher and assistant professor of public health, and Plummer Taylor, now a social worker and adjunct professor, detail a plan to establish preventative training for mental fitness that will help psychologically "vaccinate" service members against depression and PTSD, the most common precursors to suicidal thoughts. Thomas and Plummer Taylor detail their mental fitness training program to shift from post-trauma treatment to pre-trauma prevention. Each topic addressed is illustrated with stories from veterans. Part of the solution, Thomas and Plummer Taylor explain, is to present prevention as something for all service members, and as a positive, strength-building, challenging activity for champions, as opposed to a post-trauma treatment only for "weak and broken" warriors.

  • The New Town Hall: Why We Engage Personally with Politicians The New Town Hall: Why We Engage Personally with Politicians
    Author(s): Masullo, Gina;
    Contributors: Masullo, Gina;
    Abstract:

    Drawing on in-depth interviews with a wide variety of Americans, this book answers two questions: How and why do we personally engage with elected officials online and offline? What influence does this personal political engagement have on our democracy?

    Never before has it been so easy for Americans to make their personal views known to their elected officials. Citizens can tweet their opinions to their political representatives or respond to a Facebook post on politicians' pages to convey their approval or dislike for policies. They can engage politically through virtual town halls or show up in person at a protest easily organized through digital platforms. But this mediated relationship also makes it easy for politicians to push back against the opinions of their constituents by deriding their views or even blocking them online.

    The New Town Hall gives readers a firsthand look at personal political experiences through vivid stories from a variety of Americans. Researcher and former journalist Gina Masullo documents how Americans feel when they are blocked on social media and demonstrates how political talk with elected officials—both online and offline—leads to more involved types of political participation, such as protests or campaigning for political candidates. She contextualizes these personal political experiences with an eye toward understanding how these interactions influence the democratic process.

    • Includes data and examples from a wide variety of interviews with citizens about their on- and offline interactions with politicians
    • Explains how political talk with elected officials online and offline leads to more involved types of political participation, such as protests and campaigning
    • Shows how politicians' refusal to communicate with citizens affects the democratic process

  • The Problem with Parenting: How Raising Children Is Changing across America The Problem with Parenting: How Raising Children Is Changing across America
    Author(s): McDermott, Nancy;
    Contributors: McDermott, Nancy;
    Abstract:

    The Problem with Parenting serves as an essential guide to the recent origins and current excesses of American parenting for students, parents, and policy makers interested in the changing role of the family in childrearing.

    Family scholarship focuses predominately on the evolution of family structure and function, with only passing references to parenting. Researchers who study parenting, however, invariably regard it as a sociological phenomenon with complex motivations rooted in factors such as class, economic instability, and new technologies.

    This book examines the relationship between changes to the family and the emergence of parenting, defined here as a specific mode of childrearing. It shows how, beginning in the 1970s, the family was transformed from a social unit that functioned as the primary institution for raising children into a vehicle for the nurturing and fulfillment of the self. The book pays special attention to socialization and describes how the change in our understanding of parenthood, from a state of being into the distinct activity of "parenting," is indicative of a disruption of our ability to transfer key cultural values and norms from one generation to the next.

    • Suggests that families are no longer able to reliably socialize children
    • Proposes that the reason the family has ceased to function as a socializing institution has less to do with changes in structure than the replacement of a child-centered ideal with a therapeutic imperative
    • Suggests that parenting is new mode of childrearing that arose in the absence of a reliable institution for childrearing
    • Argues that parenting culture itself is a response to the experience of the breakdown in socialization that occurred that began in the 1970s
    • Makes the case for a renewal of a societal commitment to children and the rising generation

  • Ghost Guns: Hobbyists, Hackers, and the Homemade Weapons Revolution Ghost Guns: Hobbyists, Hackers, and the Homemade Weapons Revolution
    Author(s): Tallman, Mark;
    Contributors: Tallman, Mark;
    Abstract:

    With thorough analysis and balanced reporting, Ghost Guns: Hobbyists, Hackers, and the Homemade Weapons Revolution is an essential resource for readers seeking to understand the rise of homemade firearms and future options for managing it.

    For more than a century, strict gun control was possible because firearms were produced in centralized industrial factories. Today, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, combining old and new technologies, threatens to upend this arrangement. An increasing number of hobbyists, "makers," technology provocateurs, and sophisticated criminals are proving that you don't need a factory to make guns anymore.

    The security challenges of this transformation are increasingly apparent, but the technologies behind it hold tremendous potential, and so while to ignore the security implications would entail risks, the costs of new policies also must be evaluated. "Do-it-yourself," or DIY, weapons will bring significant ramifications for First and Second Amendment law, international and homeland security, crime control, technology, privacy, innovation, and the character of open source culture itself. How can liberal society adjust to technologies that make it easier to produce weapons and contraband?

    Informative and thought-provoking, Ghost Guns: Hobbyists, Hackers, and the Homemade Weapons Revolution carefully analyzes the technical, legal, social, political, and criminological trends behind this challenging new area of illicit weapons activity.

    • Provides readers with informative background on DIY gun laws and legislative trends and fascinating descriptions of legal and illegal practices with homemade weapons around the world
    • Presents in-depth explanations of the consumer appeal, technology, economics, politics, and enforcement challenges behind America's quickly growing DIY gun-making phenomenon
    • Evaluates the current and future appeal of homemade weapons for differing types of crime and terrorism
    • Offers a series of forward-looking recommendations for weapons control and security policy in an increasingly "post-industrial" 21st century

  • Understanding and Treating Chronic Fatigue: A Practical Guide for Patients, Families, and Practitioners Understanding and Treating Chronic Fatigue: A Practical Guide for Patients, Families, and Practitioners
    Author(s): Young, Joel;
    Contributors: Young, Joel;
    Abstract:

    Some doctors still think Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a "fake" diagnosis. In this book, Joel Young, MD, presents the research, experience, and treatments that prove otherwise.

    Millions of Americans experience chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), continuous exhaustion and a feeling comparable to that of having just run a marathon when all they have done is a daily living task, such as taking a shower or getting dressed.

    Doctors don't have tests for CFS, and some think it's a faux or psychological disorder. Joel Young, MD, in this heavily researched book, explains why it is a true physical illness, and how it may be treated. He details how he successfully treats the symptoms, which can include severe fatigue, "brain fog," chronic pain, and sleep problems. Unlike doctors who recommend exercise, supplements, or opioid medications, Young integrates options such as long-acting stimulants, meditation, and dietary changes to reduce fatigue and non-opioid drugs, medical marijuana, and self-help options including yoga for the associated chronic pain.

  • The Historian's Red Badge of Courage: Reading Stephen Crane's Masterpiece as Social and Cultural History The Historian's Red Badge of Courage: Reading Stephen Crane's Masterpiece as Social and Cultural History
    Contributors: Cimbala, Paul;
    Abstract:

    For someone who did not actually fight in the American Civil War, Stephen Crane was extraordinarily accurate in his description of the psychological tension experienced by a youthful soldier grappling with his desire to act heroically, his fears, and redemption.

    Stephen Crane's novel The Red Badge of Courage provides an extraordinary take on the battlefield experiences of a young soldier coming of age under extreme circumstances. His writing took place a generation after the war's conclusion, at a time when the entire nation was coming to grips with the meaning of the Civil War. It was during this time in the late nineteenth century that the battle over the memory of the war was taking place.

    This new, annotated edition of the novel is designed to guide readers through references made through Crane's characters and how they reflect Civil War military experiences—specifically how "the youth's" experiences reflect the reality of the multi-day battle of Chancellorsville, which took place in Virginia beginning on May 1, 1863 and concluded on May 4 of the same year. The annotated text is preceded by introductory essays on Crane and on the Civil War. Crane's short story "The Veteran" is also included to allow readers to better understand the post-war lives of Civil War soldiers.

    • Explains key background information for better understanding The Red Badge of Courage
    • Includes introductory essays on Crane and on the Civil War
    • Provides the full text for both Red Badge and Crane's lesser-known short story "The Veteran" with comprehensive annotations that illuminate the links between the stories and their historical contexts

  • Student-Centered Learning by Design Student-Centered Learning by Design
    Author(s): Whiting, Jacquelyn;
    Contributors: Whiting, Jacquelyn;
    Abstract:

    Current research is pushing schools to adopt more student-centered approaches to the classroom experience, and educators—librarians and classroom teachers alike—are being challenged to revise their curricula and instruction to be student-centered, personalized, and differentiated.

    This book empowers librarians, teachers, and administrators to be empathic problem-solvers and decision-makers. By reframing the challenges that members of a learning community face as opportunities to better meet teaching and learning needs, readers will find that adoption of a mindset focused on users—namely, design thinking—elevates and creates opportunities for innovating pedagogy. Moreover, it can enhance school culture as well as build channels of communication among various stakeholders in schools and districts.

    When educators of any subject or discipline apply design thinking skills to their curriculum implementation, authentic student-centered learning experiences become the core of the learning experience. The case studies shared in this book provide examples of student-centered approaches being used in elementary, middle, and high schools, so that readers have many models on which to base their work and from which to build confidence in shifting their pedagogy to keep the student at the center of teaching and learning decisions.

  • From Text to Epitext: Expanding Students' Comprehension, Engagement, and Media Literacy From Text to Epitext: Expanding Students' Comprehension, Engagement, and Media Literacy
    Contributors: Witte, Shelbie; Gross, Melissa; Latham, Don;
    Abstract:

    This volume explains how analyzing textual elements that aren't part of the text but connected to it can be used with K–16 students to improve comprehension, engagement, critical thinking, and media literacy.

    Beginning with an introduction that briefly explains Genette's theory of paratext and discusses the functions of epitext theory, this book comprises theory-to-practice chapters that showcase ways in which teachers and librarians can use elements independent of a text to discuss texts and media with students. Chapters include a practitioner's section specifying practical approaches and explanations for how to use epitext.

    Scaffolding an application of theory to practice, this title provides educators with an original approach to increasing literacy engagement and integration as well as for increasing media literacy and critical thinking. It includes practical ideas for using epitext in the classroom to promote critical thinking and for collaboration between teachers and librarians. It also includes editorial sidebars that provide additional "how-to" ideas, support deep thinking, make connections to relevant content in other chapters, and provide examples for students in K–16 classrooms.

    • Explains how epitext can be used to scaffold understanding by providing summaries of content, interpretations, criticisms, and appreciations others share about the work
    • Demonstrates the creative process by following the trail of the production of a work
    • Helps students to explore and use various media to complement and extend their experience of a work

  • Mindful School Libraries: Creating and Sustaining Nurturing Spaces and Programs Mindful School Libraries: Creating and Sustaining Nurturing Spaces and Programs
    Author(s): Stephens, Wendy;
    Contributors: Stephens, Wendy;
    Abstract:

    Complement efforts in the classroom to work on social-emotional learning, and understand the affective needs of young people in library settings.

    Given the national climate of anxiety and fear, climbing diagnoses of neurological difference, and overall sensitivity, fewer young people come to school able to self-soothe. Building on the work of Nel Noddings, Lynne Evarts, and Meghan Harper, this book focuses on the deliberation, quiet, and reflection sometimes described collectively as mindfulness.

    From breathing exercises to meditation, mindfulness exercises can be a coping mechanism for at-risk students, and librarians can create an environment, away from the classroom, in which students can explore their abilities to regulate and control their social and emotional responses, skills that underpin information retrieval and analysis. The role of school libraries in promoting mindfulness in the twenty-first century could parallel the quest for intellectual stimulation and self-improvement that informed the public libraries movement in the late nineteenth century. Providing practical suggestions for working in concert with classroom teachers, school counseling staff, and community partners, this guide will inform librarians' practice by increasing awareness of how to create a nurturing space for students in the school library.

    • Highlights how mindfulness strategies have been successfully implemented in classroom and library spaces
    • Recommends a range of easy-to-implement, no- or low-cost adjustments to space and services that can make the library experience more inclusive and positive
    • Harnesses the increasing interest in social-emotional learning and how that undergirds student readiness to learn and confidence as a learner

    Contributors: Skinner, Julia; Gross, Melissa;
    Abstract:

    This practical and research-based volume focuses on how libraries can meet the needs of underserved patrons in college and university libraries, with an emphasis on those facing trauma, abuse, and discrimination.

    While university libraries strive to meet the needs of all students, some groups have traditionally been overlooked. This volume engages with those underserved populations on college campuses, with an emphasis on those facing trauma, abuse, and discrimination. It brings a variety of authorial voices to discuss different aspects of that service and to share current research related to underserved populations in libraries. This combination supports research in LIS and beyond while offering concrete ways for service providers to make a difference in the lives of their patrons.

    Editors Skinner and Gross have both conducted extensive research in ethically meeting patron needs. They and their contributors are keenly aware of the complex and interwoven considerations that inform such service, such as patron desire for confidentiality accompanied by an urgent need for assistance. This volume is committed to sharing diverse voices in the field and to exploring the interrelationship between theoretical findings and practical applications—all in the service of underserved patrons.

    • Readers will gain a deep understanding of these underserved populations and how to respond by providing meaningful services
    • Readers will learn strategies for outreach and the development of community service programs
    • Readers will become aware of the wide variety of user populations whose information behavior may be limited by an experience or life circumstance that they may not want to divulge

    Author(s): Bober, Tom;
    Contributors: Bober, Tom;
    Abstract:

    Every upper-elementary and middle school educator can teach news literacy and connected literacies, including text, visual, graphic, and video literacy, using this book.

    This book suggests that news literacy is made up of several other literacies and skills that must not only be explored across the subject areas, but also connected to students' real-world consuming and sharing habits. A series of lessons, some using technology, lay a foundation for building these multiple literacies and skills. While not meant to be a complete program, the lessons provide a holistic experience and are adaptable to personalize students' learning.

    The author melds strategies for finding and making meaning from information, the multiple literacies that young consumers of news must be familiar with to navigate news and other information, and the digital skills necessary to navigate today's news options. Whether students encounter news in the firewall-protected classroom or pushed out to them on their phones, the series of lessons encourage them to give pause and ask important questions as they move beyond simply consuming to become critical readers of the news.

  • Leading Professional Development: Growing Librarians for the Digital Age Leading Professional Development: Growing Librarians for the Digital Age
    Contributors: Moen, Mary; Buchanan, Sarah A.;
    Abstract:

    This book shows how LIS schools and professional organizations can help information professionals to continue their education after finishing formal programs to keep up with the growing demands of the field.

    As technology rapidly advances, the need for continuing education increases at an accelerating rate. Within 10–12 years of completing formal education, most information professionals' knowledge and skills become out of date, leaving them only half as able to meet the new demands of the profession. Additionally, the increase in online education programs for LIS students can limit their connection with practicing professionals and, in some locations, their engagement with diverse populations.

    LIS schools and professional development organizations, however, can support professional development in new and exciting ways. Readers will learn how faculty in LIS schools are innovating their courses and providing continuing education experiences. Taking advantage of the benefits of online, digital, and experiential learning projects, they are creating meaningful, collaborative learning opportunities between students and practitioners in the field. The book also addresses how social media tools can help online students experience interactive community learning and network within the profession before they start their positions.

    • Explains how LIS schools can provide collaborative professional learning opportunities through online and experiential programs
    • Introduces readers to the profession and the diversity of the clientele they will serve, referring to successful programs as models
    • Highlights benefits and examples of international study programs
    • Helps strengthen partnerships between LIS schools and the professional community
    • Offers guidance for planning professional development events

  • Supporting Transfer Student Success: The Essential Role of College and UNiversity Libraries Supporting Transfer Student Success: The Essential Role of College and UNiversity Libraries
    Author(s): Nuhn, Peggy; Kaufmann, Karen;
    Contributors: Nuhn, Peggy; Kaufmann, Karen;
    Abstract:

    This research-based book with practical applications teaches academic librarians to support their transfer students effectively at both universities and community colleges, even when transfer students' information literacy needs differ from those of other students.

    Colleges and universities across the United States serve a large and growing population of transfer students. Current estimates suggest that more than one third of college students transfer from one institution of higher education to another at least once. At some institutions, transfer students compose up to fifty to sixty percent of the new incoming class. Academic librarians' understanding of the demographics and potential needs of transfer students is essential to supporting their success and mitigating "transfer shock."

    Just as public libraries often bridge gaps between individuals and services, academic libraries can proactively support the often unique needs of transfer students by spearheading textbook affordability initiatives, developing innovative programming, and making appropriate referrals to non-library student services. In this practical guide to supporting transfer students, authors Peggy L. Nuhn and Karen F. Kaufmann teach academic librarians how to optimize information literacy instruction, support research, help reduce stress, and connect the library to virtual students. They emphasize the importance of establishing partnerships with feeder institutions and other campus departments to best support transfer student success.

    • Teaches academic librarians and stakeholders to understand the holistic value of the academic library to transfer student success
    • Defines the concept of "transfer shock" and explains how academic librarians and libraries can mitigate this phenomenon
    • Outlines key theoretical and practical applications of information spaces, information science, and information literacy as applied to the transfer student academic experience

  • Libraries Supporting Online Learning: Practical Strategies and Best Practices Libraries Supporting Online Learning: Practical Strategies and Best Practices
    Author(s): Mune, Christina;
    Contributors: Mune, Christina;
    Abstract:

    Using practical examples from librarians in the field, this book lays out current issues in online learning and teaches librarians how to adapt a variety of library services—including instruction, reference, and collection development—to online education.

    Recent studies highlighting the challenges faced by online learners show that skills librarians are uniquely qualified to teach, such as information and digital literacy and source evaluation, can improve academic performance in online courses and enhance the online learning experience.

    Just as embedded librarianship was developed to answer the needs of online courses when they emerged in the early 2000s, online learning librarian Christina Mune now teaches "online librarianship" as a set of realistic strategies for serving a variety of online education models. Each chapter of Libraries Supporting Online Learning addresses a different strategy for supporting online students and/or faculty, with all strategies derived from real-world practices.

    Librarians will find information on best practices for creating digital literacy tutorials and dynamic content, providing patrons with open access and open educational resources, helping patrons to avoid copyright issues, promoting peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing, posting to social media, and developing scalable reference services. The tools and practical examples in this book will be useful for all educators interested in increasing the efficacy of online learning.

    • Offers practical strategies to librarians responsible for supporting hybrid and online courses and degree programs as well as MOOCs
    • May be easily adopted as a library science textbook for those teaching instructional design, instructional technology, distance librarianship, or academic library issues courses
    • Includes case studies on assessment information and grant writing for administrators and library advocates

  • Engaging Students through Campus Libraries: High-Impact Learning Models Engaging Students through Campus Libraries: High-Impact Learning Models
    Contributors: Schaub, Gayle; McClure, Hazel;
    Abstract:

    This collection of collaborative, high-impact learning experiences in information literacy teaches librarians how to engage students in hands-on, experiential learning.

    The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) has identified 11 practices that are highly impactful to student learning to designate as high-impact educational practices (HIP). These practices engage students deeply in a meaningful, connected way to their work. Librarians teach and support student learning in many ways that assist these AAC&U practices, such as information literacy instruction for capstone, writing, and first-year seminars and research support for collaborative assignments and projects.

    Engaging Students through Campus Libraries calls attention to work in information literacy that goes beyond a traditional librarian role; it features librarians and faculty partners who engage in projects that highlight salient, experiential facets of the AAC&U practices in order to teach information literacy. In this book, librarians will learn high-impact, experiential learning models for working with students. They will understand how to think about and describe how AAC&U best practices are currently embodied in their organizations. They will also imagine future learning experiences for students with HIPs in mind, resulting in information literacy that is integrated into disciplinary work in a vital and transformative way.

    • Demonstrates the varied and exciting possibilities for engaged, integrated information literacy instruction
    • Includes details about planning and preparation so that readers can replicate, scale, or adapt practices in other library environments
    • Offers librarians practical models for pursuing their own partnerships in other disciplines

    Abstract:

    Understand the unique needs of teens and adults with autism and how to adapt existing library programs to be more inclusive.

    Autism spectrum disorder is a lifelong condition, but programs and services are mostly for children. As this population ages and the number of adults receiving autism diagnoses grows, are public libraries serving this group? Serving Teens and Adults on the Autism Spectrum offers practical strategies for delivering better service to individuals with autism, from library programming to technology, collections, library volunteers, and the information desk.

    Relying on feedback and help from the autism community in her area, Carrie Rogers-Whitehead created programs for children, teens, and young adults on the autism spectrum. In this book, she shares advice on developing programs that focus on teamwork, transitions, and social skills. She explains best practices for reference interviews and teaches readers how their libraries can partner with nonprofit and government entities to develop workforce skills and connect adults with autism to jobs. Ready-made program activities for teens and adults with autism make it easy for libraries to better serve this often misunderstood group.

  • Radical Collaborations for Learning: School Librarians as Change Agents Radical Collaborations for Learning: School Librarians as Change Agents
    Contributors: Harada, Violet; Coatney, Sharon;
    Abstract:

    Librarians can be effective catalysts and vital connectors who facilitate successful partnerships that enrich students' lives—"radical collaborations" that have deep and far-reaching impact.

    Envisioning schools as learning organizations requires collaborating with the greater communities as an integral part of the school's dynamic. How can librarians be key players in realizing this concept of schools?

    This book addresses this essential question, as well as how librarians can serve as catalysts in reaching beyond the traditional school to form alliances and partnerships with a range of community organizations and agencies, and how these collaborations result in transformative learning experiences not only for the students but for the adults who work together as well.

    The authors provide examples of schools where librarians, library directors, and educators are joining together in these types of unique partnerships. Chapters are authored by library professionals, who describe what stimulates and motivates these partnerships and how they are collaboratively developed and sustained. This publication will be a catalyst that will inspire readers to grow similar alliances in their own schools and districts among public libraries, colleges, arts foundations, nonprofit cultural organizations, and STEM-related agencies.

    • Defines a unique and critical role for today's school librarians
    • Describes the rationale for forming distinctive collaborations to enhance student learning
    • Features projects currently being implemented and how to foster collaborations
